Rendre visible l’invisible.

Le titre de l’exposition consacrée à Aleandre Farto aka Vilhs interpelle autant que le travail de l’artiste. il résume le processus créatif de Vilhs qui a connu une trajectoire fulgurante sur la scène artistique internationale en moins de dix ans.

D’Alexandre Fargo à Vilhs

Les trains, les murs, les panneaux publicitaires… de Lisbonne ont été ses premiers terrains de jeux. Alexandre Farto devient Vilhs à ce moment là, 5 lettres « faciles et rapides à taguer à la bombe ». Mais à l’inverse de nombre d’adolescents qui signent là un geste de rébellion et d’affirmation puis disparaissent du paysage, Vilhs montre déjà toute sa singularité et son talent. Constatant à son grand regret que ses tags sont cesse recouverts ou effacés, il fait évoluer sa technique et son travail. Puis il part étudier à la prestigieuse Saint Martin’s school à Londres. C’est dans cette  ville qu’il se fait vite remarquer, il n’a que 20 ans ! Dix ans plus tard, ses oeuvres sont exposées dans le monde entier. Entre temps il est revenu à Lisbonne pour ouvrir son atelier et se créé un point d’ancrage dans sa vie d’artiste international.

L’oeuvre du temps en commun

« Il y a dans nos productions beaucoup de choses qui se ressemblent comme le fait d’attendre l’action du temps. Je dois attendre que le temps fasse son travail, que les couches de la ville s’accumulent sur les murs. Ensuite on travaille avec des effets qui requièrent du temps pour prendre forme et cette partie ne peut être achevée plus rapidement. Le processus de création du congnac est assez comparable puisqu’il demande un temps long également ». Vilhs

Les oeuvres créées pour cette exposition et celle réalisée pour l’édition limités VS Hennessy, se sont nourries des inspirations de Vilhs au sein même des archives de la Maison et de ses visites au coeur des métiers et des savoir-faire.

Trois étoiles, un bras armé, des pampres de vignes, des éléments iconographiques forts se dévoilent partiellement sur les oeuvres. L’exposition permet ainsi au visiteur de découvrir comment l’artiste a procédé pour créer le design de l’édition limitée de Hennessy Very Spécial, comme s’il se trouvait dans l’atelier de Vilhs.

La trajectoire fulgurante de Vilhs sur la scène internationale ne saurait laisser indifférent. Plus de 200 portraits puissants et interrogateurs sur nous-même sont disséminés à travers les grandes capitales mondiales sur tous les continents. Ils portent le même questionnement de l’artiste soucieux de la condition humaine dans un univers urbain en constante évolution.

Vilhs pratique le recyclage en récupérant des matériaux rejetés par la civilisation urbaine. Des portes de maisons abandonnées se transforment au gré de son génie créatif face à ce matériau du quotidien. Il travaille avec une lame très fine des millefeuilles d’affiches publicitaires, attaque à l’acide des plaques de métal destinées au rebut, sculpte au marteau piquer ou à l’explosif des bas reliefs de façades délabrées.

Des actes de « destruction créative » comme il s plaît à qualifier sa démarche singulière qui lui permettent de rendre visible l’invisible.

Pour mieux saisir la profondeur et l’authenticité de la démarche de Vilhs, le parcours de l’exposition se termine par le regard posé par le visiteur sur une oeuvre originale créée pour Hennessy. En la regardant alternativement de près et de loin, le visiteur peut percevoir combien la distance donne du relief et du sens à l’oeuvre de l’artiste.

Celui qui fut un des plus beaux châteaux  de Charente a subi de nombreuses vicissitudes au fil des siècles. Une association s’occupe avec courage de faire revivre ce lieu qui vient d’être choisi par Stéphane Bern pour faire partie des presque 300 sites éligibles au Loto du Patrimoine qu’il a créé.

En position dominante sur la vallée de vignes et l’ancienne voie romaine reliant Périgueux à Saintes, le château date du IX siècle, ou du moins la place forte qui défendait le comté d’Angoulême.

Au XII è siècle, il fait partie des places fortes concédées à Richard Coeur de Lion. Pendant la guerre de cent ans, Jean Sans Terre et le terrible Prince Noir y auraient séjourné à de nombreuses reprises. Certainement ce qui a valu au premier château d’être rasé après avoir être revenu dans le giron du royaume de France à la fin du XIVè siècle. Et c’est le grand père du roi François 1er qui termine la construction d’un nouveau château.

Hélas les guerres de religion portent un nouveau coup à cet édifice. Le château actuel a été construit au début du XVII siècle.

Au moment de la Révolution Française, le château est à nouveau en piteux état, il est ensuite vendu comme bien national, et la dégradation s’accélère. Chacun vient de servir en pierres et certains châteaux de la région en possèdent quelques unes….

Enfin classé momument historique en 1984, puis propriété de la commune 10 ans plus tard, le château sort  enfin de son trop long sommeil .

Entre campagnes de restauration, visites sur rendez vous (voir plus bas) et animations culturelles et festives, l’édifice  revit peu à peu.

Il se visite sur rendez vous, en appelant la mairie de Bouteville. Et n’oubliez pas le loto du patrimoine…

A stunning building

On river bank Charente, built on an unstable place, the Corderie Royale is laid down on a raft made of oak pieces, deeply pressed on marshy ground. This explains the building could have a slant shape nowadays, even if it’s perfectly safe !

The Corderie Royale and the boat basins were part of the Arsenal, wanted by Colbert, Minister of King Louis XIV, in order to built war vessels, in a safe place, far from english cannons. Here, for 250 years, more than 350 vessels have been built, armed and maintained. Some of the greatest military and scientific expeditions set off from here.

A rope making  factory

The ropes were one of the important pieces on a vessel. The  largest ones needed 100 kms of ropes !Each rope of 195 meters long had to be built all in one piece : 270 meters were necessary to braid the rope,that explains the dimension of the building. On north end, raw material was stored and on south end, the rope was  tarred to be wear resistant.

Le « jardin des Retours »

The garden of returns has been created after the restoration of the building. As many botanic expeditions came back to Rochefort in the past time, with plenty of unknown and never-seen-before plants, Rochefort owns nowdays famous green houses and particulary  an academy of begonia. Alongside the Corderie Royale, willows,hazelnut trees, rub shoulders with magnolias, tulips and many others trees and plants are witnesses of this glorious past.

The Hermione freedom’s frigate

The most famous ship l’Hermione, symbol of french-american friendship has been built in this Arsenal. Moreover, the young major general La Fayette boarded the Hermione on 1780, to fight alongside the American insurgents who were struggling for their independence. 18 months later, the American insurgents, whom La Fayette had joined, won decisive victories, first in Chesapeake Bay, then in Yorktown, with the support of French troops led by Rochambeau and de Grasse.

“From the first moment I heard the name of America, I loved it; from the instant I knew it struggled for freedom, I was consumed with the desire to shed my blood for her I will count the days I got the chance to serve it, everywhere and anytime, among the happiest days of my life.” La Fayette 

In July 1997, the Hermione-La Fayette association embarked for a tremendous challenge : the reconstruction of the Hermione frigate. In 2015 the new fregate sailed to Boston, Yorktown and New York to celebrate this part of the history. You can visit the Hermione and know more about it if you come to Rochefort.

Un bâtiment unique et étonnant

Il faut en faire le tour pour comprendre toute l’originalité du bâtiment construit au 17 ème siècle dans le plus pur style classique : 374 mètres de longueur pour… 8 mètres de largeur.

Installée en bord de Charente, construite sur un terrain instable, la Corderie Royale repose sur un radeau de pièces de chêne de 30 centimètres de diamètre, solidement enfoncées dans la vase.

Les vicissitudes des siècles lui donne une perspective quelque peu penchée à certains endroits, ce qui lui confère un charme certain.

Avec les formes de radoub, elle fait partie intégrante de l’Arsenal, voulu par Colbert pour construire et armer les navires de la Royale, à l’abri des canons étrangers. Protégé dans l’estuaire sinueux de la Charente, à quelques kilomètres seulement de l’océan, l’arsenal a été une pièce maîtresse de l’histoire militaire nationale.

Une usine de cordages

L’activité de cordage était essentielle dans la construction des navires : les plus importants nécessitaient 100 kms de cordage ! Ces cordages de 195 mètres de long chacun devaient être réalisés d’un seul tenant. La technique de fabrication nécessitait de réunir plusieurs brins de chanvre ensemble, à la manière d’une tresse, il fallait donc disposer d’une longueur d’au moins 270 mètres pour tresser la corde. Le bâtiment a donc été conçu en 3 parties, une aile principale pour tresser la corde et deux pavillons plus larges à chaque extrémité : côté nord pour stocker le chanvre et côté sud pour réaliser le goudronnage du cordage.

La librairie maritime

Il faut absolument visiter le Centre International de la Mer, espace muséographique, qui vient juste d’être rénové. Vous pourrez même essayer de réaliser un cordage ! De très belles expositions thématiques y sont également proposées. Mais mon endroit préféré est la librairie maritime.

J’aime ce lieu d’une grande sérénité dans lequel je fais toujours des découvertes qui m’enchantent. C’est une belle manière de voyager autour du monde en restant dans un même lieu : littérature et récits de voyage, livres d’histoire maritime, ouvrages pédagogiques liés notamment à l’environnement, livres pour les enfants, cartes maritimes, lithographies…

Pierre Loti, dont la surprenante maison rochefortaise est en cours de recherche de financement pour sa restauration, est en bonne place. Officier de marine et écrivain, il est chez lui dans la librairie maritime.

Et bien évidemment une place de choix est réservée à l’aventure de l’Hermione.

L’Hermione ou comment faire vivre une utopie

La Corderie Royale superbement restaurée, puis l’aménagement paysager qui lui sert d’écrin achevé,  comment poursuivre cette formidable aventure patrimoniale et historique ? et pourquoi pas un bateau ? et ce fut l’Hermione. Là encore, le temps fut long entre le début de la construction et la traversée inaugurale vers les USA, presque 20 ans ! Ce chantier exceptionnel suivi par les visiteurs, dont beaucoup sont devenus membres de l’association et donateurs, a fait revivre l’activité de l’arsenal et redonner une identité à la ville de Rochefort.

L’Hermione, frégate de la liberté

L’Hermione témoigne bien évidemment de l’amitié franco-américaine et de l’histoire des deux pays. C’est en effet en 1780 que le Marquis de La Fayette s’embarqua sur l’Hermione devant la Corderie Royale pour partir prêter main-forte aux « insurgés » qui se battaient pour s’affranchir de la tutelle de l’Angleterre. Pendant 2 ans, entre Boston, et la baie de Chesapeake siège d’une bataille décisive,  l’Hermione aida les américains dans leur conquête, appuyant les troupes françaises conduites par Rochambeau et de Grasse auprès des américains. Puis elle retraversa l’Atlantique et escorta des navires faisant route vers les Indes, avant de sombrer au large des côtes françaises Elle reste pour toujours un symbole très fort de l’histoire des Etats-Unis avec le Marquis de La Fayette.

Si ce navire originel a inscrit son nom dans l’histoire, sa reconstitution de nos jours est l’expression d’une aventure collective hors du commun. Ils étaient très très peu au départ et leur idée souleva plutôt le scepticisme. J’ai la chance et le privilège de bien connaître celui qui en est à l’origine, l’ancien maire de la ville, un visionnaire pugnace et diablement efficace qui a su fédérer les énergies nécessaires pour faire de ce rêve une réalité.

Je vous emmènerai prochainement à sa rencontre. Amoureux fou de sa ville, celui qui en a été le maire pendant 24 ans après avoir été 7 ans premier adjoint, a redonné sa fierté à une ville en lui faisant retrouver son passé historique industrieux et ouvert sur le monde. Il termine actuellement un second ouvrage  après celui publié en 2004 et intitulé tout simplement : Rochefort, 30 ans de passion.

The deserted caburote

Its small red roman tiles roof  appears right above the vineyard rows in summer time. We can see the caburotes here and there.

Most of them are more than hundred years old, built at the end of the XIX century. They were  like a second house for the winegrowers. First of all, they used their little house  for lunch time and to protect them from weather conditions, hot time in summer, rain or cold temperatures in winter. Furthermore, the caburotes also allowed to store small equipment needed for the vineyard works.

Daily life in the caburote

We can find some caburotes with black stones inside, or part of old fireplace. It just indicates the place of last fires. An horse feeder  directly digged into the wall remind us that men and horses shared this shelter. The horses, faithful companions of the winegrowers,  worked also in vineyards.

A small table, chair or bench were the only one elements of furniture. A rack carved into the limestone walls allowed to store day-to-day objects.

The caburote used also as a little workshop to store equipments  such  as stakes, wires… and to  prepare the « bouillie bordelaise ». It’s an old fungicidal composition, made of copper sulphate called « blue stone » (as it gives a blue color to leaves and walls),  and slaked lime.

Nowadays, the work shop is quite different…. 4 wheels motorized  on front row of vines! Tractors replaced horses. No wistfulness in this thought as work-conditions of winegrowers are fortunately easier than in the past time.

However, it would be a shame if theses little houses disappear one after the other. We’ll loose this nice heritage. Some winegrowers have restored their caburote which was used by their grand-fathers. It’s a good idea.

As the cognac region works to prepare a request of classification for the world heritage of UNESCO, the caburotes take pride of place in this context.

La caburote, un patrimoine oublié

Son petit toit en tuiles romanes du pays dépasse juste les rangs de vignes en été. On l’aperçoit de loin en loin, ponctuant le paysage vert à l’infini. Pour la plupart d’entre elles, ce sont des centenaires voir plus.

Construites à la fin du XIXè siècle, les caburotes avaient alors une véritable utilité. Pour le viticulteur  d’abord, qui venait y manger, au chaud ou à l’ombre suivant les saisons. Il pouvait également s’y réfugier lors d’une pluie trop violente. Un petit chez soi en somme,  d’un grand dépouillement, au milieu des vignes.

La vie quotidienne dans une caburote

On retrouve aujourd’hui la trace de la cheminée, les pierres noircies en sont le témoignage. Certaines d’entre elles l’ont même conservé. On peut également retrouver un râtelier en pierre pour faire manger les chevaux fidèles compagnons de travail dans les vignes.

Elles étaient équipées sommairement d’une table et d’un banc, et disposaient parfois d’une étagère, taillée dans la pierre. La caburote permettait également d’entreposer le petit matériel, les piquets, de pouvoir préparer la fameuse « bouillie bordelaise », c’était un petit atelier au milieu des vignes…

Aujourd’hui, l’atelier est sur 4 roues en bordure de rang, il se déplace facilement au gré de l’avancement du travail. Le tracteur a remplacé le cheval, c’est une autre époque et la nostalgie n’est pas de mise. Les conditions de travail des viticulteurs sont moins rustiques.

Cependant, il serait dommage de voir ces petites maisons disparaître peu à peu. Fort heureusement, des viticulteurs ont choisi de restaurer ce petit élément de patrimoine qui a servi à leurs anciens, et c’est tant mieux.

Dans la perspective d’un dossier de demande de classement au patrimoine immatériel de l’UNESCO, les caburotes ont toutes leur place.

Species of rare plants and flowers play hide and sike. Perennials, climbing plants are the queens of the place. This stunning garden keeps all its secrets if you just cross it. You need time enough to discover some elegant details, well-done matches of colours…

As the garden-lovers know, flowers had a language of their own and in Véronique garden, chatterin never ends. She is a master in the art of finding amazing ways of combine flower varieties and succession of bright blossoming. She is not alone in her small paradise : birds and bugs bring their fantasy by picking up seeds, and carry them in on other place !

You could think that Véronique garden is just like a museum. It’s exactly the contrary, being the preferred game-place of her grandkids.

A new generation of flower lovers and landscape architects ?

In the past time, the dovecote told us on his owner and of his importance. Only the nobility could have right to own a dovercote.  The authorizaton given to built a dovercote was called « Le droit de fuie » which ended during the french revolution, end of XVIII century.

This « pigeon loft » has been built in 1717 for Pierre Méhée d’Ardenne,  musketeer of the King and famous swordsman.

The pigeonnier d’Ardenne is covered by a pointed roof.  At 3/4 height, a stone belt avoids the predators, such as weasels and rodents, to enter and kill the pigeons. Same belt inside, as it’s better to be safe than sorry !

Inside, 850 « boulins », what we can translate as small individual nest for pigeon, are the symbol of the prosperity and wealth of the owner. Each of them is built in terracotta.

Unfortunately the storm of 1999 caused damage to the  roof of the dovecote. And fortunately an association has worked to the restauration of this heritage. More détails on the association here . Every one can become donor.

The pigeonnier d’Ardenne is surrounded by numerous trees fruit from ancient varieties :  almond, cherry, pear, fig…. The children of Moulidars school have planted theses trees in 2007. It’s now a beautiful place to rest and discover the landscape.

In fact, a very nice stroll with a stunning view specially on spring time.

Heritage, vineyards, slow life, respect for nature, just a  perfect symbol of the cognac way of life.

He came in 2014 to visit Cognac region on the advice of the friend of him, and met Jean Luc Montembaud, cognac lover from Cognac Tasting Tour who opened  secret places for him.  He felt in love with the region, the people, the old distilleries and black cellars. If he discovered our god blessed region, he’s not a newcomer at all in photography. Since 16 years, after a first live as press photographer, he’s a renowned specialist of food and beverage shots. Each year since the beginning of the famous contest « Global Food Photographer of the Year », one of his photos is selected as a finalist.

I do love this exhibition even if I regret that the framed prints are not in the same room. In my opinion, this subtile work lose in intensity.

I do love the black -and -white choice which gives  an idea of the silent of the men and cellars. These stunning shots, which have certainly needed many hours to catch the right moment, seem to display a raw expression without any affect. And at the same time Mark Unsworth makes visible the invisible.

Cellars and distilleries are particular places, owning a great part of mystery. He has perfectly succeeded in revealing the soul of them, as these of the people in front of him.

For cognac, ageing is a core value, the exhibition celebrates its in an artistic manner.

In the vineyards

I talked you about the indian summer, last month. We have been lucky to keep it for a large part of  october :  some misty mornings  specially near the Charente river, and sunny  warm afternoons. A good weather for the winegrowers as it’s not really easy harvesting with rain and cold temperatures, and not so good for wine. So  great thanks to the weather which has been friendly with us.

I already told you how lucky we are to « live in cognac », this small french area which produces the most famous « eau-de-vie » of the world. Let me try to convince you below.

Last days to play golf after work, days grow shorter,  and daylight savings at the end of the month, will stop this good moment for several months… Sometimes we could just play 4/5 holes…

A stunning place to see sunset on the white limestone front of houses of the city : a « spot »known by the photographs coming to take pictures and timelapse of this rainbow playing on stones.

Heritage

Do you believe me if I say we have a small Versailles here in Charente ?  A crazy dream of two brothers of past century, art lovers, who lost all their fortune, to build a replica of Versailles facade, closed to their family castle. After they died, it has been a bit tricky for Château de la Mercerie, during too long years. Happily, since 5 years, like a phoenix, the  castle is restored by an association of volunteers who worked with passion all the year long. Many work to do, many work have been done.

The 220 meters long of the facade has entered the Guinness book of records as the longest  castle facade ever built in XX century.

And to end this stroll, let’s have a look at the nice village of Villebois Lavalette,  neighbour of Château de la Mercerie, with its impressive castle and awesome market place.

Let me tell you the true story  of a sleeping beauty in cognac vineyards and of two princes of  design, elegance, and creativity coming for Miami.  For Pierre and Max, it has been love at first sight for this 15th century manor left to rot for a too long time.

« In twenty years when I look back on this chapter of my life, I hope I will remember most the regular walks we take around the Logis with our three dogs, and our cat Nelson. We walk, the dogs unleashed and totally free, for hours-on-end and pass through forests and farmland, by lakes and rivers, and rarely see anyone. The communal destination-of-choice is a source which was framed in carved limestone over 600 years ago and where today the dogs love to swim. And then I think, « Where else in the world in 2010, and only 2 hours from Paris by train » ?

This poetic words, Max wrote them in  the agenda he created to highlight « the best of Charente ». Since 2010, 7 editions have beeen printed for the new year, each of them with a special tone : stone of Charente,  gastronomy and cognac, roman art, skilled artisans, history and so on…

Belgian native, Pierre worked for a long time in States and felt the desire to return back in Europe, and Max, american citizen, who studyied for a while in Firenza, dreamed to live on the old continent. One day,  they left their superb property of Miami and travelled a lot, mainly in Italia and South France,  to find their new restling home : need of wide space for their animals, and sun for them. The quest finished as they passed the imposant front porch  of the Logis : it was there and nowhere else.

They did not know anybody when they arrived, they are famous nowadays, here and not only. Max and Pierre have restored the manor in a magistral manner, in a total respect of the architecture and with a mad skill for interior design. Working with local crafstmen, they used simple, rough material found on the site : wood, steel, old farm tools… an incredible mix of modern design and re-interpreted  old materials.  After 3 years and half of hard work, the Logis recovered his past beauty..The result is so successfull that Pierre and Max opened a boutique in the barn, called « Sortie de grange » featuring decorative objects, antiques, lighting, gifts, fabrics and finds.

And in the outbuildings, overlooking the nice courtyard, they have nestled their B&B, 3 stunning bedrooms,  and a guest cottage, each of them named after a former owner of the Logis. International livestyle, design, tourism and architecture media regularly publish on Logis de Puygaty and their gifted owners.

Max always thought that Charente, which is the adminstrativ area of Cognac region but not only, was not enough known. During 7 years, he edited a luxury  agenda called « Best of Charente » to highlight  the hidden facets of the region. Max is one of the best ambassadors or Charente in the world.  » There is, here in Charente, a heritage which must be know all around the world. To make it known, I have had the idea of the agenda »
